Chapter eighteen

James

I was doing dumb things again. Despite telling myself I wouldn’t be anywhere near Boston when Mrs. White showed up—I even told my secretary to make sure I had no reason to be there—here I was, entering the Kade hospital in Boston.

It wasn’t entirely of my choosing. The complicated surgery I had scheduled for this afternoon had been postponed for two days later. That left me with hours and hours of nothing to do. Usually, I’d call Janet and have her call in someone on my long waiting list.

But this time?

I booked it as fast as I could to Boston. But I arrived too late. Mrs. White should be done with the tests by now and heading back to Maine. Still, I couldn’t help hoping for a miracle when I asked for her status.

“She had to delay, sir,” the nurse at the front announced. “She is resting at the Kade house and is due for the next exams in...” The nurse checked some notes. “Less than an hour.”

“You sure?” I blurted out, then caught myself. Of course she was sure. “Thank you, Nancy.” I paused. “Was anyone with her?”

“Yes.”

My heart rate shot up. “Do you remember what she looked like?”

“Tall, brown hair, not particularly pretty.”

It was Les. She had come.

“She asked about you,” the nurse continued.

“S-she did?” My voice squeaked. It never squeaked. I cleared my throat. “What was the nature of her inquiry?”

“She wanted to know if you were here, sir. She seemed curious about your whereabouts.”

I liked that sign. I liked that sign a lot.

“Thank you, Nancy. I’ll—”

“Are you working here today, sir? We have a surgery we had to postpone, but if you’re here, we can put it back on the schedule.”

Normally, I’d agree in a heartbeat. But my heart was yearning for something else these days. However, if this possible rendezvous ended in disaster, it would be nice to be able to throw myself back into work. “Give me at least an hour.”

“You going on break, sir?”

“Yes.”

“Of course, sir. We’ll schedule it for the following hour.”

“Thank you.” I headed off, fighting against the urge to sprint down the hallway. Then I wished I had when Samantha fell into step with me. Conversation was going to eat the precious time I had.

“You’re going on break for a whole hour?” Her voice dripped with disbelief.

“I recall you encouraging me to take more breaks.” I didn’t slow down my pace. She kept up with me. She’d always been able to do that.

“So,” she continued, “you’re combining them all into one giant one now?”

“Not quite, although that is an idea to consider.” I pulled out my phone and made a quick phone call to see if a helicopter was ready. Luck seemed to be with me; one was ready to leave the second I arrived.

“Who is Mrs. White?” she demanded once I hung up.

“A patient suffering from hip pain. She’s taking part in that research I started last year.”

“There has to be more than that.”

“Why do you ask?”

“Because you look a lot happier than a doctor should about some old lady with a hip problem.
